The University of Toledo is a public university located in Toledo, which is the county seat of Lucas County, situated in the US state of Ohio, with a population estimated at a number of more than 313 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census, fact which makes it the 4th most populous city in the state, as well as the 57th largest city in USA. Due to its position on the railway line, between New York and Chicago, and as a result of the Miami and Erie Canal, the city has become well known for its industry, particularly in glass and auto parts production, as well as for its art community, education, and local sports teams.
The University of Toledo traces its roots back in 1872, when it first started as a private arts and trades school, today, being recognized as a Tier 3 law school by U.S. News and World Report, offering its students more than 250 academic programs through 10 colleges, which include: the College of Arts and Sciences, Education, Business Administration, Law, Medicine, Engineering and Pharmacy.
Due to its technological advancements, the institution has been also named one of America's 100 Most Wired Colleges by Yahoo! Internet Life magazine, being also highly ranked by various important publications, for many of its educational programs, including for the College of Law, which has been ranked as a Tier 3 law school by U.S. News and World Report, as well as for its graduate School of Engineering, placed by The Princeton Review on the 18th place among the best in the country.
Its athletic teams are known as the Toledo Rockets, who compete in NCAA's Division I Mid-American Conference, in various sports, being, perhaps, best known for their fotball and men's basketball teams, sports in which they've experienced most of their notable achievements, among the most significant being the 9 football Mid-American Conference Championships won in in 1969, 1970, 1971, 1981, 1984 and 1990. In the last few years, the men's tennis team has also shown improvement, in 2009 finishing 2nd in regular season with an 17-10 record, reaching the finals of the MAC tournament for the first time in 35 years.
Among the most resonant names, on Toledo's list of notable alumni, there are: Bob Dempsey - NASA Flight Director, Gerald Jakubowski - President of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Fredric J. Baur - inventor of the Pringles Can, John B. Neff - `one of the 10 most influential investors of the 20th Century`, according to Barron's Magazine, Emlen Tunnell - NFL Hall of Fame, and Michael Sallah - Winner of 2004 Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting, among others.
